Google AI Overviews tracking
AI Overviews sit above the traditional results, which makes them the most consequential AI surface for anyone who already invests in SEO. Ranking first no longer guarantees the click if the summary above answers the question and cites someone else.
How Google AI Overviews builds an answer
An AI Overview is generated from Google's regular Search index and cites a small set of supporting pages. That makes it the AI surface most connected to classic SEO: the content that earns citations tends to be well-structured, clearly sourced and already trusted for the query. It also means an Overview can appear for some queries and not others, and can change as the underlying results change.
Crawler access
Unlike ChatGPT and Perplexity, AI Overviews has no dedicated crawler token of its own. It draws on Google's main Search index, so ordinary Googlebot access is what governs eligibility — there is no separate AI Overviews bot to allow or block. That is worth knowing before assuming an AI-specific robots.txt rule will change anything here.
