AI Citations are the sources an AI assistant references or links to in support of a generated answer, revealing which pages informed what the model said.
Many assistants ground their answers in retrieved documents and surface those sources as citations. These references matter for two reasons: they show which pages a model trusts on a topic, and they are a route to being included in future answers, since content that is frequently cited tends to be drawn on again.
Analyzing AI Citations means looking at which domains appear, whether they are the brand's own pages, editorial coverage, user-generated discussion, or competitor sites, and how that mix changes across engines and queries. A brand cited as a primary source on its own topics is in a stronger position than one whose answers are built entirely from third parties.
